What Are Insects?
With millions of species crawling, flying, and buzzing across the globe, insects make up the largest group within the animal kingdom’s Arthropoda phylum. They’re built with segmented bodies, jointed legs, and protective exoskeletons. Each insect’s body is divided into three main sections:

The Head-
The head houses an insect’s mouthparts, eyes, and antennae. A simple eye has just one lens, while compound eyes are made up of many tiny lenses, allowing the insect to see with greater detail.
The Thorax-
This section of the insect’s body holds the wings, legs, and the muscles responsible for movement. Every insect leg is made up of five segments, and their shape can vary depending on the species—each design helping the insect navigate and thrive in its particular habitat.
The Abdomen-
The final region of an insect’s body is the abdomen, which contains all of its vital organs. Insects have stomachs and intestines that allow them to digest food and absorb nutrients, and their reproductive organs are also located in this area.
What are arthropods?
An arthropod is a small animal with a hard outer covering, a body made in sections, and jointed legs. Common arthropods found around Wisconsin homes include insects like ants and earwigs, as well as spiders, centipedes, and millipedes.
-Jointed Legs
Arthropods have legs with joints, similar to elbows or knees. These joints let them bend and move easily. This helps them walk, climb, dig, catch prey, or escape danger.

Arthropods have body parts attached in pairs, such as legs, antennae, or pincers. These appendages help them sense their surroundings, gather food, defend themselves, and move.
-Segmented Body
An arthropod’s body is divided into sections. Depending on the type of arthropod, these sections might include a head, thorax, and abdomen, or other grouped body parts. These segments help organize how the body works and allow for better movement and flexibility.
-Hard Exoskeleton
Instead of having bones on the inside like people do, arthropods have a hard outer covering called an exoskeleton. This shell protects their body, helps prevent water loss, and provides support for movement.
-Molting
Because their hard exoskeleton does not grow with them, arthropods have to shed it as they get bigger. This process is called molting. After molting, they form a new larger exoskeleton.
